Short Answer

Do not specify an entrance door with one thickness value.

A useful steel-door specification should identify, at minimum:

  • the steel thickness of each door face;

Nominal Thickness vs Minimum Thickness

The word nominal identifies a product or ordering value. It does not always mean that every measured point will equal that number exactly.

A minimum-thickness requirement is clearer when the project genuinely requires that the supplied base material must not fall below a defined value.

However, the buyer and supplier still need to agree on:

  • the governing material standard;
  • the permitted manufacturing tolerance;

Base-Metal Thickness Is Not the Same as Finished Thickness

This wording separates the principal components while leaving project values to be completed and approved.

Evidence-backed performance wording

The proposed leaf, frame, hardware, reinforcement, dimensions and installation configuration shall remain within the scope of the applicable [test/classification/certification] evidence.

Use this only after the relevant evidence and supplied configuration have been matched.

How Should Thickness Be Checked During Inspection?

The inspection plan should be agreed before production, particularly when the contract uses a minimum-thickness requirement.

A practical plan can identify:

  • incoming-sheet documentation;
  • material standard and ordered thickness;
  • calibrated measuring equipment;
  • whether measurement occurs before coating or on an agreed exposed sample;
